Series: Shades of Magic #1
Publication Date: February 27th 2015
Kell is one of the last Antari—magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel Londons; Red, Grey, White, and, once upon a time, Black.
Kell was raised in Arnes—Red London—and officially serves the Maresh Empire as an ambassador, traveling between the frequent bloody regime changes in White London and the court of George III in the dullest of Londons, the one without any magic left to see.
Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they’ll never see. It’s a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.
After an exchange goes awry, Kell escapes to Grey London and runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.
Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they’ll first need to stay alive.
My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
“I’d rather die on an adventure than live standing still.”
I finally read it!
After owning this for ages and seeing it everywhere and even starting it at one point before getting hit with a slump, I have read this book! Halleluiah!
And not only did I read it but I really had a GREAT time reading it!
Of course everyone knows what this is about. It follows Kell who is one of very few people who can travel between worlds and the different Londons that exist. Red London where magic prospers. Grey London which is pretty dull as you can tell by its assigned colour but its the home place of Lila Bard so who am I to judge? White London which always seems to be in a deadly state of chaos and Black London which disappeared years ago.
This book is amazing and I have fallen in love with Victoria Shwab. I thought she’d be super angsty and mysterious and embody her writing style but I follow her on Instagram and she seems to be the loveliest person on earth.
As for the characters I love them all. Lila is amazing and it’s so funny how she’s instantly Ride or Die when it comes to Kell. Kell himself is an enjoyable character to read about and I’m looking forward to learn more about his past and see how he grows as a character.
My favourite character however is Holland and I don’t know why because he’s a bad dude. Like he did not nice things and yet I look at him and I adore him and I love him. My heart breaks for him. I’m really hoping he’s featured heavies in future books.
Although I was incredibly intimidated by the popularity of A Darker Shade of Magic and the fact that this is Adult Fiction (!) I am dying for the sequel and all the feels and amazingness I know will come.
