Bisexuals in Fiction πŸ’—πŸ’œπŸ’™

Hello and welcome to my blog … and happy bisexual visibility dayπŸ’—πŸ’œπŸ’™

I feel like a lot of the time bisexuality is something that gets swept under the rug, especially in the media and most definitely with celebrities. And so today I’m just going to be talking about some book with Bi rep that I loved, some that I want to read and just some great bisexual characters in general.

Books I Loved …

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice & Virtue by Mackenzi Lee- Its been a while since I read this but this book is great! Its got humour and adventure as well as complex characters bursting with personality. Monty Montague is unapologetically himself in a time when “himself” is not accepted. This book follows the Monty on his travel year which ends up going completely off the rails fast, all the while he’s harbouring a major crush on his best friend Percy.

Let’s Talk About Love by Claire Kann- Although this may not be my favourite book due to the writing style I highly recommend this book! We follow Alice, a black asexual biromantic character, over the summer as she’s dealing with the break up with her girlfriend and as she meets Takumi, the new boy working at the library. Like I said, I wasn’t a fan of the writing but I really loved and appreciatedΒ the representation and how it actually showed Alice having romantic feelings for boy guys and girls.Β

Heartstopper by Alice Oseman- Aka literally the cutest thing in the world following Nick and Charlie, 2 English boys falling in love and being soft. Nick is bisexual, a realisation he comes to in Volume 1. I enjoyed how real this was: Nick googling things along the line of “am I gay? Am I bi?”.

Red White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuistan- Possibly one of the most popular books of this year but with good reason. This book is everything I wanted and more. Alex is the son of the president of the United States who, after a very public altercation, has to pretend to be best friends with Henry, the Prince of England. This soon leads to him realising he might not be as straight as originally thought. If you haven’t all read go and read this book!

Books I Want to Read …

Obviously because I haven’t read these books I can’t be 100% sure on how prominent the bisexual representation in these books actually is.Β

Autoboyography by Christina Lauren- People have been raving about the book recently and I really want to read this. It follows Tanner who has to go back in the closet after moving to Utah. I feel like this is gonna pack a punch but I’m ready.

All the Better Part of Me by Molly Ringle- Okay, so, not 100% sure what this is about but I think its about a guy in his mid 20’s who realises he’s Bi and things like that. Don’t know exactly but I kind of want to read it.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid- Literally who hasn’t heard of this book? This book is adult fiction so I’m scared but it sounds really interesting: Evelyn Hugo glamorous celebrity telling her life story.

Girl Made of Stars by Ashley Herring Blake- I wanted to read this before I found out about this possible bi rep. Its about a girl whose best friend accuses her brother of rape and I know a lot of people have been raving about this.

Characters I love …

Sarah Lance and Constantine (Legends of Tomorrow)

I love these two so much! Both Bisexual, both incredibly badass. Legends of Tomorrow got a million times better when Sarah became official captain and Constantine was introduced as a regular.

Robert Sugden (Emmerdale)

He’s a mess but I love him!

His storyline is not the most perfect thing. While Aaron, his husband, is in prison and taking drugs to get through the abuse Robert sleeps with his ex wife’s sister which ends up in a pregnancy and the birth of his son Sebastian. Not the best thing to do with your openly BI character as it plays into harmful stereotypes but there are some amazing things about his character too: his coming out, his relationship for Aaron and the family that they built … and now he’s leaving the show and I am forever sad.

Rosa Diaz (Brooklyn 99)

I seriously need to go back and re-watch all of Brooklyn Nine-Nine because I got obsessed with something new before getting to Rosa’s coming out. I’ve always loved Rosa and I loved the fact that she’s portrayed by a bisexual actress as well. black-and-white-flowers-tumblr-transparent-12

So there we go, I really enjoyed writing this post. I’m loving all the Bi rep that we’re getting these days but obviously I want more!

(I especially want more female bisexual characters and bi characters of colour so if anyone has any recommendations please let me know)

  1. A great book with two bi main characters (and a few other minor ones) I read this year and strongly recommend is The Devouring Gray!

  2. So many great books! Just a little warning though, I really didn’t think All the Better Part of Me had good rep. (I read an eARC) I’m happy to send you a link to my review or something, it’s on Goodreads!
