Mid Year Book Freak Out 2020!

Hello and happy Friday!!!

Due to my terrible time management skills I am writing this post while still half asleep. I schedule my posts in advance because it makes things so much easier but last night, instead of being productive, I got drunk. Oops.

I’ve had a bacon sandwich and I’m making my way through a cup of tea so hopefully I’ll wake myself up quickly.

Today I am going to be doing the Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag! because we’ve done it people!! We’re halfway through the year. It’s been a wild ride but we did it. Well done us!!

My goal for this year was to read 40 books which is a lot less then I usually read but this year was supposed to be a busy year. I was supposed to be going to Italy with my school and England to visit my family. School was also supposed to be super busy this year as it was my first year of college/bachillerato.

But then Corona hit. Plans went out the window. And I completed my reading goals.

Best Book You’ve Read So Far in 2020

Like I said I’ve read 47 books so far this year but it really wasn’t hard to choose my 51NbYhDrMGLfavourite of the year. I was extremely lucky to receive an ARC of More Than Maybe by Erin Hahn from the publishers and I’m actually part of the Blog Tour. This was one of my most anticipated books of the year and oh my god this did not disappoint.

This book is full of music and mutual pining. The romance is adorable and I loved the characters.

I read this very in advance because the publication date was changed a few days after I finished it but I’ve already got my review written and ready. My dad actually came down for a midnight snack and found me typing away like my life depended on it.

Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far in 2020

Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare counts as a sequel right?? I mean it’s a sequel series to a prequel series. I’d say that counts. I really loved this book which is crazy to say considering I wasn’t even going to give this series a try. This book is nearly 600 pages long and I read it in 2 days!!! I love all the characters but I did have a hard time believing Will Herondale was middle aged. My brain could not comprehend.

Just in case that doesn’t count another great sequel I read was Heartstopper Vol 3 by Alice Oseman which was just as adorable as the previous volumes!

New Release You Haven’t Read Yet But Want To

There’s a fair few but these three especially.

I do think I’ll be getting to these soon though as I have The Falling in Love Montage by Ciara Smythe on my Kindle and I asked for The Love Hypothesis by Laura Steven and Chasing Lucky by Jenn Bennet for my birthday.

Most Anticipated Release For The Second Half of the Year

I genuinely have a list somewhere in my mess of a room. The annoying thing is that these all come out in September when I go back to school and will therefore have 0 time to read.

Biggest Disappointment

I think my biggest disappointment so far has been Serious Moonlight by Jenn Bennett.

I usually love Bennetts contemporaries. They’re so much fun, the characters have interesting and unique personalities and interests and I generally love the romances but this book just wasn’t very good.

I liked the initial dynamic between the two love interests but that slowly became cringey and I barely wanted to pick up the book.

Biggest Surprise

Tell Me Again How A Crush Should Feel by Sara Farizan was a recent read of mine. I had absolutely no expectations going into this so I was pleasantly surprised with how good it was.

This is an f/f romance that I’ve had on my Kindle for a while and it has a main character of colour, I believe she has Persian heritage.

I can’t really say much on the romance because it’s kind of spoilery but it was super cute and I highly recommend checking it out.

Favourite New (to me) Author

I feel like T.J Klune could be classed as a new author I’m interested in. I read his new release The Extraordinaries recently and I really liked the humour and writing style. I’ve only read 1 book by him so I can’t say yet if he’s a new favourite but I’m definitely open to reading more of his books.

Newest Fictional Crush

archenOk. So. I’ve read and watched a lot of other peoples Mid Year Freak Out Tag for 2020 and every time I get to this question I’m like “hmmm, I don’t think I have a new fictinal crush”.

I would like to hereby officially apologise to Adrian Everheart. I forgot about him. I did him dirty. Forgive me.

I’m currently halfway through Supernova (my plans to finish that book last night were ruined by me doing shots with my boss) and Adrian has definitly been a highlight of this entire series. I love him.

Newest Favourite Character

I kind of feel bad for mentioning this again but also not really. I loved all the characters in Chain of Gold but Cordelia Carstairs, Lucy Herondale and Matthew Fairchild were maybe my favourites.

I say “maybe” because I genuinely can’t decide who my favourite characters are in this book. I love the whole gang.  Except Charles.

Because I feel bad about mention CoG twice I’m also going to put it out there that I LOVED Alex Stern and Darlington from The Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo and am impatiently awaiting the sequel.

Book That Made You Cry

I was going to say that I haven’t cried at any books yet this year but then I remembered I re-read Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare and kept tearing up at the most random times cause I knew what was coming.

Book That Made You Happy

This year I re-read the entire Percy Jackson series just because I could and because we were in lockdown and I was feeling sentimental.

A few weeks after reading the first two books the Percy Jackson series on Disney+ was announced and that’s the highlight of my life.

So yep. My re-read itself made me smile a whole lot and the announcement we never thought we’d get also made me very, very happy.

Favourite Book to Film Adaptation

I don’t think I’ve watched any newly released book to film adaptation yet this year.

I re-watched The Mortal Instrument movie a couple of months back which isn’t as bad as everyone says it is. I genuinly really like that movie.

I am really looking forward to Cursed which comes out on Netflix this month. It’s a Merlin and Arthur inspired story that was adapted from last years graphic novel Cursed by Frank Miller & Thomas Wheeler.

I’ve already told my mum I’m busy that day and to not disturb me.

Favourite Post You Have You Have Done This Year

Most Beautiful Book You’ve Bought This Year

I love the cover of Me by Elton John

What Book Do You Need to Read by the End of the Year

I’d like to say Empire of Storms by Sara J. Maas but I know myself and I know I’m never going to accomplish that.

I don’t really know what other books I’m desperate to read by the end of the year besides new releases. I’ll wait and see how it goes.

So there we go. That was me freaking out. This tag was, as always, super fun. It was nice to look back on what I’ve read this month.

I’d love to know what you thought of any of the books mentioned. Thanks for reading and stay safe!

Elli xx
