My Favourite Quotes & Moments: Six of Crows!

Howdy!!

If I’ve not talked about it once then I’ve talked about it a million times: the Shadow & Bone series is right around the corner!!!

I have not stopped talking about this show for months now and I’m truly sorry for that, but apparently not sorry enough because I’ve decided I’m going to re-read Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo and share my favourite quotes and moment’s.

The crows seem to be featured in the show a lot more then I thought they would be since I read the entire Grisha trilogy in preparation, it only seems fair that I re-read at least the first book.

This will be my third time reading Six of Crows, I’m sure I’m going to love it just as much as those previous times, maybe even more so since I now have the knowledge of how the original trilogy ends!

*Spoilers*

When everyone knows you’re a monster, you needn’t waste time doing every monstrous thing”.

Please, my darling Inej, treasure of my heart, won’t you do me the honour of acquiring me a new hat?”

The next three are all from the same page. Page 135 is clearly superior.

Kaz cocked his head to one side, his eyes focused on something in the distance.

“Scheming face,” Jesper whispered to Inej.

She nodded. “Definitely”.

“We’re not going in through the embassy,” said Kaz.”Always hit where the mark isn’t looking”.

“Who’s Mark?” asked Wylan.

Kaz leaned back. “What’s the easiest way to steal a man’s wallet?”

“Knife to the throat?” asked Inej.

“Gun to the back?” said Jesper.

“Poison in his cup?” suggested Nina.

“You’re all horrible”, said Matthias.

She wouldn’t wish love on anyone. It was the guest you welcomed and then couldn’t be rid of.

Jesper knocked his head against the hull and cast his eyes heavenward. “Fine. But if Pekka Rollins kills us all, I’m going to get Wylan’s ghost to teach my ghost how to play the flute just so that I can annoy the hell out of your ghost”.

Brekker’s lips quirked. “I’ll just hire Matthias’ ghost to kick your ghost’s ass”.

“My ghost won’t associate with your ghost,” Matthias said primly, and then wondered if the sea air was rotting his brain.

“(…) It’s just so much easier to kill people than take care of them”.

Kaz had been impressed with the sketches. “You think like a lockpick”, he’d told Wylan.

“I do not”.

“I mean you can see space along three axes”.

“I’m not a criminal,” Wylan protested.

Kaz had cast him an almost pitying look. “No, you’re a flautist who fell in with bad company”.

“Inej!” Jesper crowed. “You’re not dead!”

Inej nodded. She didn’t look up to where Kaz stood beside Specht at the wheel. But Jesper did and gave him a cheery wave. Kaz’s expression didn’t change.

“Would it kill him to smile every once in a while?” Jesper asked.

“Very possibly”.

Because I’ve been looking for an excuse to talk to you for two days

My face during this line: 😭🤗

“I don’t want your prayers,” he said.

“What do you want, then?”

The old answers came easily to mind. Money. Vengeance. Jordie’s voice in my head silenced forever. But a different reply roared to life inside him, loud, insistent and unwelcome. You, Inej. You.

He shrugged and turned away. “To die buried under the weight of my own gold”.

Kaz felt ill. Though he’d trusted her with his life countless times, it felt much more frightening to trust her with his shame.

“The wellspring” mused Kaz, “where all sins are washed clean.”

“Or where they drown you and make you confess,” Wylan said.

Jesper snorted. “Wylan, your thoughts have taken a very dark turn. I fear the Dregs may be a bad influence”.

“I feel sorry for you, Brekker. There is nothing scared in your life”.

There was a long pause, and then Kaz said, “You’re wrong”.

AGHHH!!! HE’S TALKING ABOUT INEJ 😭

“You shouldn’t make friends with crows,” he’d told her.

“Why not?” she asked.

(…)

He said the first thing that popped into his head. “They don’t have any manners”.

“Neither do you, Kaz”. She’d laughed, and if he could have bottled the sound and got drunk on it every night, he would have. It terrified him.

“I. Should. Let. You. Die,” Matthias muttered in time with his compressions.

When Nina looked at Kaz, she couldn’t quite believe her eyes. “Saints, Kaz, you actually look happy”.

“Don’t be ridiculous,” he snapped. But there was no mistaking it. Kaz Brekker was grinning like an idiot.

Nina buried her face in her coat’s woollen collar and said, “I wish you could see what I do. I can hear every body on this ship, the blood rushing through their veins. I can hear the change in Kaz’s breathing when he looks at you.”

“You … you can?

“It catches every time, like he’s never seen you before”.

“I will have you without armour Kaz Brekker. Or I will not have you at all”.

I got emotional during this entire scene. No shame.

Kaz knew the instant he made his mistake. They’d all known it might come to this. He should have trusted his crew. His eyes should have stayed trained on Van Eck. Instead, in that moment of threat, when he should have thought only of the fight, he looked at Inej.

I’m going to get my money, Kaz vowed. And I’m going to get my girl.

So those are my favourite quotes and moment from Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo.

I had such a fun time re-reading this book. As if I wasn’t already a total Kanej stan, reading this book again has since doubled my love for them. I’m so excited to see the crows depicted in live-action. It’s gonna be sods law that I’m busy this weekend when the show’s release but I’ll stay up all night if I have to.

I definitely plan on re-reading Crooked Kingdom as soon as possible. I’ll probably wait till I’ve finished the show so that I have another thing to consume and keep the obsession going for a little while longer.

If you love any of these quotes/moments as much as I do, let me know. I’d also love to know if binging Shadow & Bone is part of your plans this weekend? Thanks for reading.
