Ok but the real question is … Dean, Jess or Logan??

Hi, hey, hello and welcome to my blog.

Today we’re talking Gilmore Girls. Specifically, which love interest was better? Dean, Jess or Logan? I think the answer to this question says a lot about a person and today we’re gonna examine my thoughts and feelings on each boy.

I can’t remember how old I was when I first watched Gilmore Girls. 14? Maybe 15. I do remember that I started watching it when I was off school ill, and purposefully dragged out my illness so that I could stay home and watch it.

I also never actually finished the show. I’m pretty sure I got to the part where Rory goes off to college but it was round about this time that she started to annoy me and I lost interest. That happens quite often.

But we’re not here to talk about Rory, at least not completely, so let’s talk about the boys:

I will forever think it’s hilarious that Jared Padalecki played a character called Dean before going on to star in Supernatural but that’s besides the point.

Dean, in my eyes, was a good first love for Rory. He played the perfect roll of “boy next door”. I loved how he interacted with Rory and Lorelai, gave tips to Lorelai’s boyfriend on their mother/daughter quirks, and who doesn’t love a boy that takes them book shopping on a date?

But I feel like somewhere along the line he became really controlling. The way he got jealous with Tristan and later Jess. The way he expected Rory to reschedule Friday night dinner with her grandparents and then the whole gifting her a car, telling her he loved her and getting mad when she couldn’t say it back straight away situation. And don’t get me started on the fact that he cheated on his wife with Rory (I kinda think this was the downfall of Rory’s character, not gonna lie).

In conclusion: He was a sweet first love but I was actually happy when they broke up for good. He ended up annoying me more than anything else.

Bonus: Tristan

I’d feel bad if I don’t mention him. I wanted more of Tristan. I do love One Tree Hill, and Chad Michael Murry was the White Boy of the Month™ for every month of the 2000’s and who am I to want to take that away from him and us, but I really liked the dynamic between the two and I would have loved to see that play out for a season or two.

I hold my hands up and admit I am bias when it comes to Jess. He is without a doubt my favourite of the three main love interests and I have no shame in saying that. I thought the seasons with him where the best of the show. Every scene with him was so much fun.

I’ve said it before on this blog and I’ll say it again: I have a thing for dark haired badboys … although I’d argue that Jess barely met the criteria of being a bad boy. Like what was his worst crime? Faking a crime scene.

My love for Jess’ seasons also comes hand in hand with frustration over how the other characters treated him. I loved Lorelai but her treatment of Jess made me so mad. You’d think a woman who got pregnant at 16 and ran away would have more compassion for a kid who’s a bit of a troublemaker, at worst, but no, she all but forces Rory and Dean together and it does my head in.

However, just because I have a personal fondness for Jess, doesn’t mean I think he’s right for Rory. I liked their relationship when they were together but I think they work better as friends. It’s also weird because the whole Lorelai/Luke situation but I digress.

And so finally we have Logan, who yeah, I ultimately think should have been the endgame guy for Rory in the original series (the Netflix “year in the life” show has not been taken into consideration at all because I haven’t watched it and don’t plan to).

I suppose I should start by saying that I’ve never actually finished the show so I don’t know why these two didn’t end up being cannon endgame. What I do know though, is that based off of Rory’s evolution as a character, he was the best of the three for her.

He was part of that richy-rich lifestyle she’s started being more apart of. There was chemistry between the two and I thought they really complimented each other quite well. I also think him calling her “Ace” was pretty cute.

While I haven’t finished the series, I have watched a considerable amount of “cutest moments” and things like that on YouTube. I’ve done my research and these are the results of that investigation.

So there we have my thoughts and feelings on the Gilmore Girls boys. This post is basically a conversation I’ve had with myself before. I feel strongly about this show, the boys, Rory’s character assassination arc, despite never finishing the final few seasons.

Two things of note:

  1. This post is product of me not being entirely sober.
  2. I made a whole ass Goodreads poll to determine what other people think. By the time this post goes live the results will be in if you want to check them out HERE.

I’d love to know what you think of my opinions, and who you think should have been endgame. Thanks for reading my rambles:))

  1. Great post! I’ve been re-watching the show and the first time I watched it I was totally Team Jess; then when it came to the re-watch I was like eehhh I don’t like the way he left and then just randomly came back to tell her he loved her, like WHAT?! Dean, I agree was a great first boyfriend, he was so sweet, but over time I don’t like how overbearing he became. I hate what the show did with each of her boyfriends, like as each one entered her life they made the previous one unlikeable. I’m not really a fan of Logan, I can’t stand his family and he just seems to drift around and not really care about anything. I love that you added Tristan, that was an interesting relationship, I agree, it ended too soon!

    1. omg you make a great point about them making her old boyfriend unlikeable ready for the shiny new boy to come into her life. dean definitely got this treatment which is annoying because there’s so many other things that could have caused conflict between them so they could break up lol

part of me wants to re-watch but the other part of me has no patience for it whatsoever.

  2. I last watched “Gilmore Girls” in my teens and back then Jess was my obvious choice. *lol* I don’t know how I’d feel if I’d watch it now but what I can say about past me is that the controlling side of Dean made me really dislike him at the end and I never got warm with Logan because he didn’t seem to care about anything. XD So yeah, past me is Jess biased. I would have to find out what current me would think. *lol* Great post! I love that you spoke about Gilmore Girls!
