Mid Year Book Freak Out 2021!!

Hi, hello and welcome to my blog :))

We’ve made it six months into the year with a loss less drama and action then last year!! Yay πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ The fact that we’ve set the bar so low that “not as bad as 2020” is as good as it gets is quite sad πŸ˜‚

My reading goal for the year was 40 books and I’m thrilled to say I not only reached that goal but surpassed it because as of right now I have read 51 books!!

The only real goals I set myself for the year were in regards to starting, continuing and finishing certain series. So far I’ve only made progress with starting series which kind of defeats the purpose of the goal but oh well.

I’ve re-read a lot more books then I was planning to this year (Heroes of Olympus, Night Owls and Shadow & Bone for starters). I also spontaneously binged a few series (Off Campus and The Vampire Academy) so part of me feels like I don’t have many exciting books to talk about but we’ll see how this goes.

2019 // 2020

Best Book You’ve Read So Far in 2021

I held off doing this tag purely for this question. For the most part I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve read this year but there’s not really been any standouts. That was until: If This Get’s Out by Sophie Gonzales & Cale Dietrich.

I have a full review coming soon but to summarise: this book follows two members of a world famous boy-band who fall in love.

This book made me so freakin’ happy and I genuinely couldn’t put it down!!

Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far in 2021

Again there’s not over many to choose from but I’ve got two for this question:

Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert is the second book in the Brown Sisters companion trilogy. I’m embarrassed by how many TBR’s this was featured on but I finally read it and loved it, maybe even more then Chloe Brown’s book.

The fake dating and friends to lovers tropes were both so well done and the romance between Dani and Zaf was everything!!

The next book(s) are Spirit Bound and also Last Sacrifice, books 5 and 6 of The Vampire Academy series. These are the only 2 books of the series that I hadn’t read and I really enjoyed them!!

New Release You Haven’t Read Yet But Want To

Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas // Hani and Ishu’s Guide to Fake Dating by Adiba Jaigirdar // The Girls I’ve Been by Tess Sharpe

All of these books can be found in my most recent book haul where you will also find a whole bunch of new releases I haven’t read yet but want to.

Most Anticipated Release For The Second Half of the Year

The Lost Girls by Sonia Hartl // The Dead and the Dark by Courtney Gould // Any Way the Wind Blows by Rainbow Rowell

Biggest Disappointment

I really loved Chain of Gold last year, it was one of my favourites of 2020 and to say I was excited for this sequel would be an understatement and yet …

Listen Chain of Iron wasn’t bad. I really did love this book, I just think I might have hyped it up too much in my head.

Also that ending 😭 I’m not a fan of the love triangle and I spent most of the book with an intense feeling of frustration because of a damn bracelett haha.

Obviously I’m still gonna read Chain of ??? (I really dont’ remember what the third title is. Is it Thorns??)

Biggest Surprise

I read books, primarily romance books with bad covers, because I think they’re going to be bad and because I think I won’t like them.

That’s was the reading experience I was expecting to have with The Deal by Elle Kennedy but God was I wrong because these books were addictive!! I flew through the entire series in about a week and then continued on with the companion series too.

Yeah they were smutty but it was done so well and the romances had depth to them, they also focused on healthy male friendships and I couldn’t not love the Off Campus series!!

Favourite New (to me) Author

I’ve seen a lot of great reviews of Sophie Gonzales‘ books but never really gravitated towards any of them until If This Get’s Out. Like I said, I really liked this book she co-authored and I’m definitely more open to reading more from her.

I also read a book by Joan He for the first time. While not a favourite simply because I’m too much of an idiot to love futuristic sci-fi, I read and liked The One’s We’re Mean to Find. I didn’t realise she also wrote Descendant of the Crane which I’ve wanted to read since it’s release so I’m really looking forward to that one.

Newest Fictional Crush

No shame in saying Thomas Cresswell is the only reason I’m going to continue on with the Stalking Jack the Ripper series.

Newest Favourite Character

The Ark! No that’s not one single characters, it’s a trio of boys in a band but they go by one name so let me appreciate them all.

We have Rowan, Lister and Jimmy. They were my highlight of I Was Born For This by Alice Oseman. I would really love a sequel just to read more about these lads.

Book That Made You Cry

I have not cried at any books so far this year if I remember correctly, I actually can’t remember the last time I cried full stop which is slightly worrying.

Book That Made You Happy

I feel like the books that brought me the most joy this year (besides from If This Get’s Out because I’ve talked about that too much already) were the Hearstopper series which I re-read earlier this month, and The Off Campus series.

Very different vibes but there it is.

Favourite Book to Film Adaptation

You all know what I’m going to say right? Like it couldn’t possibly be anything other then Shadow & Bone series. I whole heartedly believe this is one of the best film adaptations. They did such a good job of blending the two series and cast of characters in a way that made sense but also felt true to the books.

I made my mum read Six of Crows. She finished it earlier this week so my next step is getting her to watch this show with me.

Favourite Post You Have You Have Done This Year

  • Sour Album Tag – this was a really fun tag, I love the album (I’m literally listening to it rn) and it was also in celebration of me getting my drivers licence.
  • I Want to Travel but Pandemic … – It was fun to even just think about travelling again.

Most Beautiful Book You’ve Bought This Year

These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong and Grown by Tiffany D. Jackson are two of the prettiest books on my shelf. Would love to actually read them some day πŸ˜‚

What Book Do You Need to Read by the End of the Year

I think my main priorities right now are: These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong, Verona Comics by Jennifer Dugan, Never Saw You Coming by Erin Hahn and Opposite of Always by Jason Reynolds.

So there was The Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag. I’m really happy with how my reading is going so far this year but I am hoping to really step it up in terms of quantity and quality, especially over the summer.

I’d love to know your thoughts on these books, as well as how you’re doing with your reading related goals. Thanks so much for reading :))

Elli xx
