What I’ve Been Watching … #8

Hello. I am tired.

My study abroad uni has this cool thing where on a random day in the fall semester they cancel classes and everyone goes to the lake for the day.

The down side to this is, despite the busses not leaving til 10am, they wake everyone up at 5am. Add a day in the sun, kayaking and swimming, to the 5am wake up call and me still having homework to do for tomorrow’s classes, what ends up happening is me being exhausted.

My eyes are literally closing as I’m writing this and all I want to do is curl up in bed … but my roommate has friends over watching a movie and I didn’t have the social capacity to deal with new people right now.

And so here I am wrapping up everything I’ve been watching recently. I’ve not done one of these in a while and I’ve watched a lot so I’m just gonna jump right into it.

Bullet Train

You ever read a book or watch a movie that scratches an itch inside your brain you didn’t know you had? That’s how this movie made me feel.

I wanted to watch this movie ever since I saw the trailer while I was at the cinema over the summer watching something else. Unexpectedly I ended up watching this movie during my first week of study abroad. I’m not saying watching this movie was the highlight of my trip so far cause I literally spent the day at the lake today but … it’s up there.

The best part of this movie were the twins, Lemons and Tangerine – their relationship was impeccable and the Thomas the Tank Engine jokes were even better. As soon as this is available outside the cinema I’ll be watching it again.

Not Okay

I’m a simple girl. Tell me a movie features either Zoey Deutch or Dylan O’Brien and I’ll probably watch it. Tell me a movie features both of them and you bet your arse I’ll be watching it as soon as possible. That’s what happened here.

I’d been following this one on Tik-Tok and had quite high hopes and thankfully I ended up enjoying this one. It was a movie that commented on social media, mocking influencers and how self-centred they come across. It also made Zoey and Dylan’s characters extremely unlikeable which is a feat well done.

Chip ‘n’ Dale Rescue Rangers

If you’re looking for a good time, go watch this movie. I saw this movie trending and decided to stick it on while I was bored and it was unexpectedly really fun, filled with easter egg jokes and lots of laughs.

Thor: Love & Thunder

After watching this movie someone asked me what I thought and I said “it was fun” and they groaned. Apparently me saying it was fun meant it was shit. It’s not shit people!

This movie had a fair bit to live up to after Thor Ragnarok and okay maybe it wasn’t as good as that third movie, but it was a good time! I laughed a lot. I might have even shed a tear.

If we’re all being honest, anything is better than those first two Thor movies.

Purple Hearts

Oh would you look at that, another movie I watched because it was trending. I have a soft spot for those later generation Disney stars – Sophia Carson, Dove Cameron, Sabrina Carpenter – and I try to watch whatever they’re in. Also, the actor who’s playing Henry in the Red, White & Royal Blue is the main male character so I wanted to check it out.

I asked my mum if she wanted to watch this with me and she said “no I’m going to bed in a minute”. A minute later and she did not go to bed, instead she told me to pause the movie so she could sit up (why did I need to pause for her to sit up??). Half an hour later she was making a cup of tea and a bowl of popcorn.

There’s Someone Inside Your House

… I completely forgot I watched this movie. In my defence I watched it back in like June. I’ve had a fair few sleeps since then.

Just cause I forgot about it doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it though. This is an adaptation of the Stephanie Perkins book of the same name which doesn’t have the greatest of ratings but I was interested in the movie.

This movie was a lot more gorey then I was expecting – not necessarily in a gross way but in a funny way. Funny to me anyways but I love a good gorey movie (Final Destination is one of my favourite franchises). This was a good fun time but not necessarily a new favorite, as is evident by me forgetting I even watched it.

The Summer I Turned Pretty

Just goes to show how long I haven’t done a Movie/TV wrap up cause it feels like forever ago that I watched this TV show.

I did a whole post about how surprised I was that I loved this which you can read but in short: hated the book, loved the TV show. I’m as shocked as anyone. Literally everything I didn’t like about the books was completely overhauled and I love that for me.

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin

When I heard they were doing a Pretty Little Liars remake I rolled my eyes so hard. When I saw the trailer for this I did a complete U turn because it looked so cool! Wayyy better then the original series ever was.

I did this show old school: watching an episode a week. Or well, at least until I had to move the the U.S at which point I waited and binged the last couple of episodes.

This was Pretty Little Liars meets Scream. It was mature, bloody and brutal but still kept that teen drama aspect. The characters had common sense and even the main characters parents weren’t terrible. Shocking! Even more shocking is that you actually get answers come the end of the series. It’s just been renewed so please go watch it.

Never Have I Ever …

Here we have my new favourite comfort show. Possibly even my new favourite show full stop.

I watched the first episode of this ages ago, last year maybe (?), but was too busy to continue. While stressing about moving and flying I essentially watched a season a night. All of season 1 before flying to England, all of season 2 before flying to America. And then season 3 I tried to make last longer cause I didn’t want it to end.

Devi is a flawed character and makes so many stupid mistakes but I love her with my whole heart. Paxton and Ben’s character ARCs were spot on and I loved all the frienships. Just putting it out there that I’m team Ben. I love Paxton but I like him and Devi better as friends. Devi and Ben are made for each other. Am now counting down days for Season 4.

The White Lotus

After getting home from work at like 1-2am over the summer I develloped a habit of watching an episode before bed and it was great.

Not really sure how to describe this besides “rich people at a Hawiian resort slowly draining the will to live out of the staff, especially the concierge”.

Jennifer Coolidge just won her first Emmy for her role in this which makes me very happy cause I’ve loved her in so many other movies!

Criminal Minds.

I have watched every single episode of Criminal Minds. Most of them multiple times. I am very proud of this accomplishment. Although I’ll admit I now don’t know what to do with my life. After finishing this I went and watched a bunch of true crime serial killer shows to fill the void.

Thankfully the new show/series (I’m not sure what it’s gonna be) is coming out soon and I am buzzing.

I’ve never typed so fast in my entire life. Either I was hyped about all these shows and movies or I should write while half asleep more often cause it gives me some sort of adrenaline.

I’d love to know your thoughts and feelings on any and all of these. I’d also love to know what you’ve been watching recently! I’m always open to recommendations. Thanks for reading :))

  1. Watching every single episode of Criminal Minds is an accomplishment I wish to achieve one day. I remember absolutely loving the show when I was in my police/crime series era a few years ago and even now when I catch a random episode on tv I am hooked. I really need to pull myself together and do a full watch.

You are so right about Thor: Love and Thunder. It was fun! And that’s absolutely not a bad thing. Though I do think they could’ve cut down a bit on the humour and added some more deep or emotional scenes. However, as you said, it was very hard for this movie to live up to Ragnarok and we shouldn’t expect that. But it was a great experience. (Well, my experience watching it at the cinema was a bit weird because halfway through the movie the cinema staff remembered it was supposed to be 3D and changed it. I barely even noticed.)

And, damn, I might actually start watching Never Have I Ever now. It was on my watch list before but I feel like I’m seeing it everywhere now and a lot of people are praising it.

Really enjoyed reading this post, Elli!

    1. Haha proudest moment of my life was finishing Criminal Minds, even after graduating/passing drivers test/going to uni. I also love that I’m not the only one who went through a police show obsession period.

Yeah I definitely agree Thor could have been an even better movie if they’d took out some of the humour and replaced with with more depth. I think the villain especially had some real potential to be evil and creepy while also making a point about Gods and their followers etc. That’s so wierd that the staff forgot to put it in 3D!

Highly recommend Never Have I Ever. I was super hesitant cause it seemed kinda cringe and the main character seemed messy and annoying and, don’t get me wrong, she is, she makes so many bad decisions but she actually suffers the consequence and (most of the time) learns from it. Love this show so much haha.
Whenever you end up finishing/starting Criminal Minds/Never Have I Ever I hope you enjoy!!

I recently watched Thor: Love & Thunder as well and I definitely agree with you. It’s a fun movie, and I think people will have a fun time watching it. I did!

    1. Bullet Train is my new favourite. I’m legit counting down the days to watch it again haha. Criminal Minds is also super good. I hesitate to say fun cause it’s 15 seasons of serial killers haha. I hoenstly had to take a break from watching once cause I started dreaming about being stalked haha. The characters (minus the serial killers) are all great though!
