Let’s Talk Bookish: My Personal Reading Taste’s

Hello and happy Friday!!!

I’m actually in class right now but in an attempt to look like I’m taking notes and not just staring out into space thinking about my lunch (I’m starving), I thought I’d get cracking with this week’s discussion.

Let’s Talk Bookish is a bookish meme that was created by Rukky @ Eternity Books and hosted by Aria @Book Nook Bits, where each Friday, bloggers write posts discussing the topic of the week! Since the beginning of April, I’ve been the host of LTB, and I post each month’s topics here on my blog! November Topics!

This weeks topic is … How Do You Define Your Personal Reading Tastes? (Jillian @ Jillian the Bookish Butterfly)

Prompts: How would you define your personal reading tastes? What kinds of books do you like to read? How do you pick what books to read next? Do your reading preferences change often?

How would you define your personal reading tastes?

I would define my reading tastes as pretty basic and, ya know what, there’s nothing wrong with that! Most books are popular for a reason so of course I’m going to read books I know I’ll enjoy!

I don’t have (m)any friends that are big readers which means that I get a large majority of my recommendations from the internet. Sure I pick which one’s personally interest me, but I’m still picking from the same pot as everybody else, if that makes sense.

What kind of books do you like to read?

So it goes without saying that I mostly read YA, and then within that genre I gravitate towards contemporary, urban fantasy and mystery novels. Although, in the past year or two I’ve also become a big fan of Adult Romance’s.

I really like stuff that has magic, some sort of school setting is always welcome. Despite never having been to a hockey game of any sort, if you tell me a romance is hockey-based then I’m 100% gonna pick it up eventually. I’m also a big fan of tropes. You can win me over with the words “fake-dating” or “grumpy-sunshine”.

In all honestly I’m really not that hard to please.

How do you pick what books to read next?

There’s various things that make me pick up a book:

  • I’m a mood reader. I think it’s fair to say that my reading taste’s depend on the season – contemporary novels in Spring/Summer, more atmospheric stories in Autumn/Winter. I only recently put down a book I started in August to save it until the colder months.
  • Sometimes I feel the preasure of not having read certain books yet and will at the very least go into a month with every intention of picking them up.
  • If a sequel or adaption is due to come out that will sometimes motivae me to pick up a book.
  • Also, if I’ve recently read something and love it I’ll pick up something similair or by the same author to try and experience that joy again.

The most stupid reason I’ve every picked up books is because of the cover of the book – You know on Goodreads where they have the covers of your reading challenege for that year. Well, my anxiety manifests in a wierd way, soemtimes, where I become obsessed with these covers looking aesthetically pleasing next to each other. It makes no sense to me, but I have read certain book just so the cover fits into that Goodreads Challenge space in a pleasing way.

Do your reading preferences change often?

Hmmmm. I think my idea of what I’d prefer to read changes – like I’ll randomly get it into my head that I need to read a bunch of non-fiction or more literary novels which leads to me making lists online and soemtimes even buying the odd book or two.

But when it comes down to what I actually enjoy reading, I think it’s stayed pretty consistant. I’ve been an avid reader and part of this online bookish community for over 5 years now, and in that time my taste’s haven’t really changed.

I mean they’ve matured. I’ve read books recently that I didn’t enjoy, but would have enjoyed years ago. I’ve also branched out a little more by coming to love romance novels, being more open to adult fiction, but the barebones of then what I enjoy from a book and the genre’s I enjoy have stayed the same throughout.

And there we have this weeks Let’s Talk Bookish Discussion. I’d love to know what you’r personal reading taste’s are and if you find that change often?! Thanks for reading :))
