New Year’s Book Tag 2023!

Hi and hello!!

I know it’s late Janaury/early February so this tag may be slightly passed it’s metaphorical sell-bye date but I am an absolute sucker for end and beginning of the year content – wrapping up and looking ahead – so we’re just going to pretend like I got around to this a bit earlier than I did.

Not only that, but I was actually tagged by Dini @ DiniPandaReads so of course I had to do it eventually!!

How many books are you planning to read in 2023?

I have set my reading goal for the year to 75 books but my internal goal for myself is to hit 100 books for the third year in a row. I like to low-ball so that it’s still a goal I have to work towards which will motivate me to read more, but won’t suck the joy out of reading for me. So far I’ve read 7 books so I think I’m on a good track at the minute!

Name 5 books you didn’t get to this year but want to make a priority in 2023.

The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas // Ophelia After All by Racquel Marie // The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston // Better Than The Movies by Lynn Painter // Songs in Ursa Major by Emma Brodie

I’ve done my fair share blog posts centering around books I didn’t get to and still want to read whether that be with my 12 books for 12 months TBR or my very long list of 2022 releases I didn’t get to but still want to read. And yet, there’s still even more books that I really want to get to sooner rather than later.

What genre do you want to read more of?

I started reading non-fiction books last year so that’s definitely something I want to continue reading in 2023 whether it be autiobiographies, book on feminsm or race, a collection of essays, or even more non-fictional hisotry novels.

As I’m writing this I’ve actually already read one memoir in the form of The Hungover Games by Sophie Heawood, and have made some more progress on Know My Name by Chanel Miller which I’m slowly but surely plodding along with.

Name 3 non-book-related goals for 2023

  • I joked the other day that 2023 was gonna be my year of saying “screw it”. At the time that was an excuse just to buy tickets to my 3rd and 4th concerts of the year despite not having a job until summer but ya know what. No. This is the vibe I want to carry on for the entirety of 2023 – saying yes to more opportunies even if they care me at first.
  • Write!!! My degree is Creative Writing and English Literature so obviously I have to write for that, and I write a lot for this blog and yet I find it so hard to commit to writing my own works of fiction. In 2023 I really want to start writing more short stories because I’ve loved the recent ones I’ve written and sending off for submission to online literary magazines, and also focus on the long list of novel idea’s I have sitting in my notebooks and hopefully write at least a first draft of one of them!
  • Start thinking properly about my future career. Like I said, I’m in uni getting a degree and I do have career aspirations – I wanna be a writer or work in publishing in some way – but I can never actually envision myself doing that. It’s like my brain refuses to acknowlodge a future outside of the safety of school. I have kind of started thinking about my future, the stepping stones I’m gonna need to take, because I’ve looked at internships and things so really this goal is gonna be me actually applying to these internships I’ve found and doing more research as to how to get into this industry.

What’s a book you’ve had forever that you still need to read?

This is a list as long as my arm but I think the most nutourios book that’s been sitting on my shelf for a ridiclously long time is A Court of Thorns & Roses by Sarah J. Maas. How this book hasn’t just become one big ball of dust I don’t even know.

At this point I might need to bite the bullet and unhaul it. My parents are downsizing so, as much as it breaks my heart, a big unhaul is coming and this book will probably be one of the ones to go.

One word that you’re hoping 2023 will be

I’m hoping this year will be productive. I want to get a lot done this year, even if I’m not feeling the motivation to do so:

I’ve got 4 concerts already booked for January, March, April and June, I’m about to start my 2nd semester of 2nd year, this summer I’m going to be working as much as I can at the bar and hopefully with an online internship. Then we have the fact that I want to read so many books and write my own things. That’s not even thinking about the fact that the beginning of 3rd year of university is fast approaching and with that means I’ll be planning/writing my dissertation soon.

Agh! I’m simultaneously excited and anxious thinking about it all but I’m hoping to accomplish a lot!

I feel like this officialy marks the end of my “new year readin plans” content. I’ve milked this cow for all it’s worth. With that beind said, this tag was fun. Thanks so much to Dini, again, for tagging me :))
